The Brief

As part of the new Countryside Properties housing development in Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, artist Tim Ward of Circling the Square was commissioned to create a sculptural gateway marking the entrance to the Neighbourhood Centre and shopping district.

The installation, titled Interconnecting Arches, was designed to form a striking contemporary landmark while incorporating references to local heritage. The underside of the interconnected arc structures required durable visual elements featuring high-resolution imagery sourced from the town’s historical archives.

The material specified needed to support the artistic vision while delivering long-term outdoor performance in a prominent public setting.

The Challenge

The project required a solution capable of balancing artistic integrity with structural and environmental performance.

As a large-scale public artwork positioned within a pedestrian gateway, the installation would be exposed to constant weathering, UV exposure and day-to-day interaction. The selected material needed to:

  • Maintain colour vibrancy and image clarity over time
  • Withstand scratching, corrosion and environmental exposure
  • Require minimal maintenance in a busy public space
  • Integrate seamlessly into a sculptural framework

In addition, the historical imagery had to be reproduced with precision and fidelity, preserving fine detail and tonal depth from archived photographs.

The Solution

3mm stove-finished primaDURA aluminium panels were specified for the underside visual elements of the sculpture.

The primaDURA coating system delivers exceptional resistance to UV fade, weathering, scratching and corrosion, ensuring long-term durability in exposed public environments. Its high-resolution print capability enabled crisp, colour-consistent reproduction of archival imagery, bringing local history to life beneath the arches.

Lightweight yet robust, the aluminium panels integrated seamlessly into the sculptural form without compromising structural design. The low-maintenance finish further ensures that the installation will remain visually impactful with minimal upkeep.

The result is a contemporary gateway that not only marks the entrance to the neighbourhood centre but also connects residents to Broadbridge Heath’s heritage, combining artistic expression with durable, specification-led material performance.
