The Brief

Located at Hook Head in County Wexford, forming the eastern boundary of Waterford Harbour, the site holds significant maritime heritage spanning from monastic times through the Norman period and the Knights Templar to the modern era.

The project required the creation of interpretation signage to communicate this rich history clearly and accessibly, while complementing the coastal setting and withstanding the demands of an exposed environment.

The Challenge

Situated at the dramatic coastal setting of Hook Head, beneath the 13th-century Hook Lighthouse — one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world — the signage needed to perform in a highly exposed maritime environment.

Constant wind, salt air, UV exposure, and fluctuating weather conditions presented long-term durability challenges. At the same time, the installation had to respect the architectural and historical significance of the 800-year-old landmark, ensuring interpretation enhanced the visitor experience without detracting from the setting.

Balancing environmental resilience with heritage sensitivity was essential — delivering signage capable of withstanding the elements while maintaining clarity, quality, and visual integrity over time.

The Solution

A combination of ecoDURA and primaDURA was specified to deliver a durable, long-term wayfinding and interpretation solution suited to the exposed coastal conditions of Hook Head.

13mm ecoDURA High Pressure Laminate was selected for key wayfinding elements, providing excellent structural integrity and resistance to moisture, salt air, UV exposure, and general weathering. Its robust composition ensures long-term stability and legibility in a demanding maritime environment.

primaDURA aluminium panels were used for interpretive components requiring high-definition print clarity and long-term colour retention. With its specialist coating process and inherent anti-graffiti and vandal-resistant properties, primaDURA helps maintain visual quality despite heavy visitor use.

Together, the materials deliver a low-maintenance signage solution designed to withstand coastal exposure while preserving the clarity and quality expected at one of Ireland’s most historic landmarks.
