Project: Modernisation of key railway routes
Project: Modernisation of key railway routes
Outcome: Lorem Ipsum
Newton-le-Willows railway station reopened following the completion of a £19 million upgrade delivered by Galliford Try and Network Rail, with support from Merseytravel and the Local Growth Fund.
The works form part of the wider Great North Rail Project, a major infrastructure programme investing £340 million into the Liverpool City Region to improve connectivity, capacity, and passenger experience.
As part of the station modernisation, the brief focused on delivering replacement wayfinding and station signage that would support a safer, clearer, and more intuitive passenger journey, while meeting the durability and compliance demands of a busy operational rail environment.
As part of the modernisation works, replacement signage at Newton-le-Willows railway station needed to reflect the station’s unique heritage. The site sits on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, widely recognised as the birthplace of the modern railway when it opened in 1830.
Any new signage therefore had to be sympathetic to the historic setting, complementing the character of the station while meeting the expectations of a contemporary transport hub.
Operationally, the environment presented further challenges. The station experiences high passenger footfall and is exposed to outdoor conditions, requiring signage that could withstand daily wear, weather exposure, and ongoing operational demands without loss of clarity or appearance.
The brief was to deliver post-mounted wayfinding signage that balanced heritage sensitivity with modern performance, ensuring clear navigation, long-term durability, and a consistent passenger experience within a busy, outdoor rail network setting.
To meet the demands of a busy, outdoor rail environment, primaDURA was specified for the full suite of directional and wayfinding signage throughout Newton-le-Willows railway station.
Engineered for long-term performance, primaDURA offers the durability required to withstand constant passenger footfall, prolonged weather exposure, and day-to-day operational wear. Its highly resistant surface finish provides excellent protection against graffiti and vandalism, helping maintain clarity, appearance, and legibility with minimal maintenance.
The material’s proven resistance to UV exposure and environmental weathering ensures the signage retains its visual quality over time, an essential requirement within the operational standards of Network Rail.
The result is a cohesive, robust wayfinding scheme that supports safe passenger movement while respecting the station’s historic setting. primaDURA delivers a reliable, low-maintenance signage solution suited not only to this project, but to rail stations across the North West and wider UK rail network.
