The Brief

Another fantastic project to have been involved in with Differentia. Commissioned in the design and build element of the Gateway Interpretation Panels for the Pilgrims Way from Markinch to Ceres in Fife.

The Challenge

The Fife Pilgrims Way is a long-distance walking route stretching from Culross and North Queensferry through to St Andrews, retracing the paths once travelled by medieval pilgrims, with Ceres marking the final overnight stop before reaching the cathedral city.

As a high-footfall, outdoor project spanning varied landscapes, the signage needed to perform reliably in exposed rural conditions. Installations would face year-round weathering, including wind, rain, and UV exposure, while remaining legible and visually consistent over time.

Beyond durability, sensitivity to setting was essential. The route carries strong historical and cultural significance, so the signage needed to complement the surrounding landscape and heritage context rather than dominate it. Clear, intuitive wayfinding and interpretation were required to guide modern visitors along a historic journey, balancing robustness, clarity, and sympathetic design throughout.

The Solution

A combination of ecoDURA and primaDURA was specified to deliver a durable, high-quality interpretation scheme suited to the exposed conditions of the Fife Pilgrims Way.

Integrated within a striking architectural structure of curved larch timber and laser-cut steel, primaDURA aluminium panels were precision laser-cut and finished to form the interpretive elements, ensuring crisp graphics, long-term colour stability, and resistance to UV exposure, weathering, and vandalism.

Additional bronze floor discs were installed flush within the pavement to provide subtle, permanent route markers that withstand heavy footfall.

The result is a robust, low-maintenance signage installation that supports clear wayfinding and interpretation while maintaining its visual integrity in a demanding outdoor environment, delivering performance that matches the significance of the historic route.

Case Study Review

I chose primaDura as it combines superb print quality, robustness and cost effectiveness”. I also needed something that could be laser cut to complex shapes and NovaDura’s responsiveness to this complex project was a key component to its success.
