Located within Northumberland National Park, Redesdale is an area rich in cultural heritage, shaped by centuries of history and a distinctive natural landscape.
Today, its thriving wildlife, peaceful villages, and Roman remains sit in contrast to its past, including the site of the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, one of the most significant medieval conflicts in the region.
Working alongside The Creative Core, the brief was to deliver heritage and wayfinding signage that could sensitively interpret Redesdale’s history, wildlife and landscapes whilst providing long-term performance in an exposed outdoor environment.
Delivering new signage for Redesdale, set within Northumberland National Park, required a careful balance between heritage interpretation and robust outdoor performance.
Located in an exposed rural landscape, the signage needed to withstand year-round weather conditions, including prolonged UV exposure, wind, rain, and temperature fluctuations, while also coping with high visitor footfall.
The signage also needed to communicate a wide range of historical, cultural and environmental information in a format that remained accessible and engaging for visitors.
Ensuring long-term durability, legibility, and visual consistency was essential to avoid premature deterioration and ongoing maintenance.
Equally important was the sensitivity of the setting. With a landscape shaped by Roman occupation and medieval conflict, including the Battle of Otterburn, the signage needed to sit comfortably within its surroundings, enhancing understanding without detracting from the area’s historic character.
The challenge was therefore to deliver high-quality, long-lasting wayfinding and interpretation that would guide visitors clearly, respect the significance of the site, and continue to perform, both visually and structurally, over time.
A combination of ecoDURA and primaDURA was specified to create a cohesive interpretation and wayfinding scheme across Redesdale, providing long-term durability whilst supporting the project’s heritage and visitor engagement objectives.
Installed at over a dozen locations, the signage takes the form of lecterns and structural monoliths, providing clear orientation and interpretation while sitting comfortably within the landscape. The use of both materials allows each installation to balance durability, visual quality, and environmental sensitivity, ensuring the signage remains legible and visually consistent over time.
Designed by The Creative Core as part of the Revitalising Redesdale Landscape Partnership Scheme, the project demonstrates how robust, well-finished signage materials can support heritage-led regeneration in demanding outdoor environments.
The result is a cohesive, low-maintenance signage scheme that enhances visitor understanding, supports long-term wayfinding, and continues to perform across a heavily used, exposed rural setting.
The completed signage scheme now provides visitors with clear navigation and engaging interpretation across Redesdale’s historic landscapes. Installed at multiple locations throughout the National Park, the system combines long-term durability with high-quality visual presentation, helping visitors better understand the area’s history, wildlife and cultural significance.
