The Brief

The Forth Bridges Visitor Trail was developed to celebrate Scotland’s iconic bridge landmarks and encourage deeper exploration of the surrounding area. The five-mile circular route connects 16 points of interest across the historic communities of North and South Queensferry, as well as along the Forth Road Bridge.

Developed by the Forth Bridges Tourism Group, the trail is designed to draw visitors across both sides of the Forth, supporting local engagement and heritage tourism.

NOVADURA’s ecoDURA product was specified as part of the project, aligning with the trail’s focus on durability, sustainability, and long-term performance in a highly exposed outdoor environment.

The Challenge

Updating wayfinding signage for the Forth Bridges Trail presented a unique set of challenges. Located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the signage needed to respect the historic significance and distinctive character of the setting while delivering clear, modern interpretation for visitors.

Designed to reflect the iconic red steelwork of the Forth Bridge, which was awarded World Heritage status in 2015, the signage had to sit comfortably within the landscape without detracting from the bridges themselves.

Exposure was a key consideration. Positioned along the Firth of the Forth, the trail signage is subject to harsh weather conditions, including wind, salt air, and prolonged UV exposure.

Ensuring the signs would stand the test of time while remaining vibrant, legible, and visually consistent was essential.

In addition to durability, the signage needed to support engaging storytelling. The trail highlights16 points of interest offering panoramic views of the three bridges, alongside historical facts, local tales, and folklore.

The solution therefore needed to balance heritage sensitivity, environmental exposure, long-term performance, and clear interpretation, without compromise.

The Solution

ecoDURA was specified to meet the demands of a UNESCO World Heritage Site exposed to harsh coastal conditions.

The 13mm High Pressure Laminate (HPL) with a distinctive black core provides a robust, stable substrate designed to withstand UV exposure, moisture, and year-round weathering, ensuring long-term structural integrity and legibility.

ecoDURA’s excellent colour stability and print clarity make it ideally suited to interpretation signage, supporting illustrated maps, imagery, and detailed content while remaining visually consistent over time.

This allows the signage to complement the setting and reflect the iconic red steelwork of the Forth Bridge without visual compromise.

The finished scheme delivers a durable, low-maintenance solution that supports wayfinding, storytelling, and year-round tourism, while ensuring signage continues to perform and look good in a highly exposed environment.
